Solit's locally developed Coreport suite ready for world markets

Johannesburg, 05 Apr 2001

Solit, the Centurion-based software solutions group, has become the latest company to crack the international market with a locally developed software suite.

Using the experience it has gained in local and international markets as an implementer of enterprise software and developer of bespoke solutions, Solit, through its Web product development company, Solit Interactive, has developed the Coreport Server Suite. This suite has been launched into the European market, where it has secured its first successes.

Three major elements make up the suite: Coreport Portal Server, Coreport Workflow Server and Coreport Document Server. These were all written from the ground up as fully-fledged Web-based products, and were developed in Visual Studio.

. Coreport Portal Server is an enterprise portal, a single point of entry to corporate systems, via the intranet. It provides access and control point for managing workloads and administering complex environments.

. Coreport Workflow Server is an application for creating the workflow logic required by enterprise portals to allow participation in business processes. It can allow a user, for example, to submit a sick leave form, a claim, a purchase order or any number of form-based actions into a process, accompanied by supporting documentation.

. Coreport Document Server is an application for administering and viewing documents in the portal.

Being browser-based, the Coreport Server Suite enables employees to perform all corporate tasks from anywhere in the world. These tasks can include transactions in the company's financial files, accounting and stock systems, instituting policy decisions, or accessing the corporate HR system.

Each product in the Coreport Server Suite can be operated either standalone or together to form a complete solution. "Some companies buy the products separately to be used as engines to build proprietary systems. They are open through their APIs and Web Services, allowing developers to create their own solutions," says Alan Burger, director of Solit Interactive.

Solit Interactive also performs customisations for its clients, operating in markets such as financial services and safety processes in mines. For instance," says Burger, "we added workflow, document management and Web access on top of a banking system to offer a customer relationship management-centric solution."

Other workflow and document management solutions either support legacy systems or Web-based products, while Coreport does both.

There are several benefits in Solit's approach, notes Burger. "Because it's locally developed, clients don't have to pay the high costs associated with employing expensive offshore experts in the implementation of third-party software.

"Because the Coreport Server Suite is locally built, the intellectual property is born and bred here. This means we have product development and solution delivery close together. Implementation becomes cost-effective for our clients, since they are paying local prices for specialised skills in a globally competitive solution.

"We can easily modify our applications to local needs. South African customers buying international applications are often treated as small fish in a big pond; being close to our clients, we can easily tailor our solutions to include features needed and driven by them, Burger notes"

Burger says current experience shows that the Coreport Server Suite can compete with similar products anywhere in the world. "We don't lose bids when competing on features. This is because we offer a fully integrated suite, where other vendors traditionally only offer one of the three elements."
