Solms TCD delivers successful Linux training

Johannesburg, 04 Jun 2010

Companies are looking increasingly at using open source to reduce their cost base, increase their flexibility and reduce their risk through standard compliance. A core problem for many companies turning to open source is the difficulty of supporting these open source solutions.

While there is a growing open source services sector, the in-house support is often lacking. The Linux course offered by Solms TCD aims to assist organisations to grow internal open source and Linux competency, enabling system administrators, developers and users to effectively manage their Linux platforms. The course provides a solid theoretical understanding of Linux, which is applied in extensive practicals.

The course provides an understanding of the benefits and risks open source and Linux in particular. Candidates learn to effectively use command shells and get an understanding of a wide range of commonly used Linux commands, including command piping. It covers the Linux architecture, including the kernel, file systems, driver support, windowing systems, networking stack, run-levels and the Linux boot process.

The candidates found the course to be valuable, as one of them noted: "It's right to the point and easy to understand," and another one said: "I like the fact that we got to build a Linux system."

Commonly used Linux distributions are analysed for their purpose and the pros and cons of four different types of systems (eg, Web, database or mail servers, desktops, developer and graphics designer terminals). One of the important aspects of the course is to empower candidates to solve problems they may encounter through using various open source resources and support channels.

Linux has very extensive bash scripting support and candidates learn the bash scripting language and develop bash scripts in their practicals. In addition, the course also provides an introduction to SED and AWK scripting.

Finally a representative set of commonly used open source server and client applications is discussed. This includes database, Web and application servers, mail, print and file servers, developer tools as well as client applications like office, Web, mail and chat clients, editors, file managers and so on.
