Rapid change in consumer behaviour, globalisation, hyper competition and the Internet are all reshaping the way retailers do business. With its technology, global infrastructure and content expertise, Sony has unveiled a new multimedia presentation system for point of purchase (POP) applications.
"In today's high competitive and fast-changing business environment, in-store promotions and advertising represent an enormous challenge to retailers," says Sony Business SA product manager, Display Solutions, Marius Louw.
"In an economy where cost-cutting and increasing efficiency are essential, building the right impact upon your customers is hard but indispensable. Consumers increasingly expect to find or negotiate prices lower than the retail list prices. This, coupled with the growing perception that most brands are similar, leads consumers to define an acceptable set of brands, rather than a preferred set of brands."
The new retail opportunity lies in improving current promotions practices, to reduce associated costs and to increase the impact of retail promotions activities. A growing number of retailers are turning to new technologies to improve their point-of-sale and advertising activities and processes.
"Teamed up with a Sony plasma screen, the NSP-100 provides an affordable and flexible way for retailers to create, present and update exciting multimedia presentations - stimulating customer interest and boosting time spent in the store," he comments.
Offering high-quality encoding, upload, storage and playout of video clips, colour graphics and scrolling text, the NSP-100 is a 'network-ready' appliance that can 'push' or 'pull' multimedia content from any local area network.
Easy to use, thanks to its user-friendly content distribution management software, the NSP-100 allows retailers to build eye-catching presentations based around dynamic content that can be updated at any time - for example to feature a special in-store promotion. Its generous hard disk drive capacity allows storage of up to nine hours of high quality compressed video, and a 'playlist' of video clips and other content can be driven from a connected PC to provide even greater flexibility in customising presentations whenever required.
"An IR remote controller can be used for system set-up, file selection and playback control," adds Louw.
