Sony loses war on piracy

Sony's attempts to prevent piracy on both the PlayStation3 (PS3) and PlayStation Phone have taken a number of blows in recent weeks, says Hot Hardware.

The company says it intends to sue the PS3 hacker GeoHot, who's been an increasingly large thorn in the company's side over the past 18 months.

When Sony released the 3.21 firmware update that broke Other OS functionality, it was GeoHot who first demonstrated his own custom firmware running both 3.21 and Other OS simultaneously.

3D game consoles to reach 11m

3D technology will make its way onto more than 11 million units by 2014, predicts mobile and entertainment researcher, In-Stat, states Smart House.

The most prominent of these releases will be Nintendo's 3DS which uses autostereoscopic 3D technology that does not require specialised glasses, slated for a release in the first half of 2011.

Gaming consoles are predicted to account for 65% of all 3D mobile devices this year, while 2012 is said to hold a growth in smartphone 3D technology, forecast to represent 45% of the market in that year.

CityVille chalks up 100m users

CityVille, a social game from Zynga that allows users to build a city from the ground up, now has over 100 million monthly active users on Facebook, says CNet News.

That user base is all the more impressive when one considers that the game hit that mark a little over one month since its release. CityVille's meteoric rise has made FarmVille, another wildly popular title on Facebook, look, well, desolate. That game has over 57 million active users, according to its Facebook page.

Zynga's CityVille success has helped the company maintain its leadership position in social gaming. According to its Web site, it has over 215 million monthly active users and more than 50 million daily active users.
