Sony has unveiled the Xperia Z, an ultra-thin, waterproof and dust-resistant device.
Named 'device of the show' at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), in Las Vegas, the Xperia Z is water-resistant up to a depth of 1m, for 30 minutes.
The Android smartphone features a five-inch, full HD, 1080p Reality Display, a Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, and a 13MP camera. It also supports 4G LTE.
"When we designed the product, we were specifically thinking of the end-users as they are not primarily concerned about the tech jargon but rather the convenience of the device. The common term now is 'tap and share' as opposed to Bluetooth, which involves pairing a device and is a lengthy process," explained Mansoor Ahmed, product marketing manager for Middle East and Africa at Sony Mobile Communications.
"The device is meant to allow the user to conveniently share information through Sony devices while also being water- and dust-resistant for those everyday accidents. Kando features enhance the user's experience," he continued.
Ahmed explained that 'Kando' is a Japanese term for emotions, a feature Sony has coined to refer to the emotions linked with the experience of using the full-HD device.
Smart battery tech
The Xperia Z's Reality Display, powered by Mobile Bravia Engine 2, allows sharing capabilities with Sony digital cameras and TVs.
Ahmed noted that the device features Stamina Mode, which can improve the battery's standby time by four times or more by automatically shutting down battery-draining apps whenever the screen is off and starting them up again when the screen is back on.
Design and durability
The Xperia Z boasts Sony's new OmniBalance design approach with rounded edges and reflective surfaces on all sides. Despite its slim 7.9mm body, the Xperia Z comes with tempered glass and anti-shatter film on the front and back.
"With Xperia Z, we are bringing innovation in TV, imaging, music, film and gaming to create a super-phone experience that truly stands out," said Kuni Suzuki, president and CEO of Sony Mobile Communications.
The retail price for the Xperia Z will be announced when mobile retailers have the device in stock.
