South African Oracle User Group gears up for annual conference

Johannesburg, 06 Aug 2001

The South African Oracle User group (SAOUG) is forging ahead with preparations for this year`s annual conference to be held in Swaziland in November.

"Owing to the phenomenal increase in popularity of the SAOUG and the success of our annual conference, we have already attracted many delegates, locally and internationally," says Danny da Costa, vice chairman of the SAOUG. "A panel of 28 of the world`s most knowledgeable and elite speakers are being carefully chosen to present papers on various topics."

Prominent local speakers include Peter Deering, director application services at Computer Sciences, who will talk on critical issues facing chief information officers, and Johan Nel from Old Mutual, who will talk on the implementation of Oracle HRMS in Old Mutual SA and challenging the role of human resources in business.

"Our intention is to ensure that the focus is on knowledge dissemination via critical, current and relevant information," says Da Costa. "The theme for the conference is `Leading into the future`, and it will provide an interactive forum for Oracle customers and partners to examine the business challenges they face every day."

The diamond sponsor for this year`s conference is Compaq South Africa, with Hewlett-Packard taking the gold sponsorship. The SAOUG, while still closely aligned with Oracle SA, is now operating separately as an Association Incorporated not for gain.

"While we have had an excellent response to our call for papers, any Oracle users who would still like to submit papers, are welcome to do so. "Those papers not selected for the conference will be presented at our regular forums and social events for SAOUG members," says Da Costa.

He advises that the evening social events and a continuously running exhibition will ensure development of personal networks and knowledge via collaboration on new strategies and solutions, which will directly impact on the success of organisations. Conference papers will cover developing applications, using Java, objects and components, business intelligence, data warehousing and decision support, Web and e-commerce, Oracle applications and Oracle on Linux.

Specific topics include: using Oracle technology to implement transaction processing system for the Internet; implementing B2B e-commerce solution at Edcon; the Oracle environment - best practices case study; establishing a procurement market place using Oracle Exchange; and minimising risk through engineering systems for security.

The conference will run from 11 to 14 November at the Royal Swazi Sun.
