By The Innovation Hub
Johannesburg, 16 Sept 2010

The astronomical Solar Challenge 2010 features solar powered cars in a race through the length and breadth of South Africa.

The two-week race comprises five local and three international teams, who are expected to build their own cars and design engineering systems for their particular team's car.

Entrants will take off from Pretoria on 23 September and make their way to Cape Town via the N1. The race will continue along the Garden Route to Durban before climbing the escarpment through Vryheid, and back to The Innovation Hub, in Pretoria, on 2 October.

The current ranked number one team and the winners of the 2008 South African Solar Challenge, Japanese team from Tokai University, return to defend their title.

The principal aim of the event is to promote science and technology, renewable energy and clean mobility.

The event has been endorsed by the Department of Science and Technology; Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA); International Solarcar Federation (ISF); Motorsport South Africa; and National Energy Efficiency Agency.
