Specialist distribution company in the Siltek Technology Supply Chain Group, Intelligent Systems (IS), has revealed extended support for drive technologies in the Spectra Logic Gator architecture.
According to Gerrit de la Rey, product manager at IS, Spectra Logic now supports the Exabyte M2 and Ecrix`s VXA-1 tape drives in its Spectra 12000 and Spectra 64000 automated tape library systems. "The inclusion of these two drive technologies provides additional drive options for users of these tape libraries.
"In addition, use of Spectra Logic`s Shared Library Services (SLS) allows logical libraries with various drives, interfaces and media types to be configured - allowing different tape technologies to be matched to appropriate data centre applications," he adds.
Spectra Logic`s SLS keeps the environments separate, yet fully functional, and all within the same physical library. Maximum capacities vary from technology to technology and eight VXA-1 drives can be installed in a Spectra 12000 while the Spectra 64000 can accommodate as many as 32 drives, the latter offering a compressed storage capacity of 42 terabytes (TB) (21.1TB native).
Deploying Exabyte M2 tape drives, however, the Spectra 64000 could have a compressed storage capacity of as much as 96TB (38.4TB native). "There is an unmistakable trend to re-centralise storage in the data centre and organisations face the challenge of successfully integrating multiple media types, drive types and operating and software environments within the enterprise," says Bob Abraham, president of Freeman Reports. "Automated tape libraries with the ability to partition and share resources in such heterogeneous environments provide an unprecedented degree of flexibility and ease in achieving centralised storage."
