Spescom appoints new CEO of telecommunications division

Johannesburg, 01 Mar 2005

Spescom has announced the appointment of Thomas Makore to the position of chief executive officer (CEO) of Spescom Telecommunications (Pty) Ltd.

Makore - an electrical engineer with graduate and post-graduate degrees - comes to the JSE-listed technology development group with a strong business background.

Since 1993 Makore has held various posts with Siemens, both in SA and in Germany. His most recent position was that of managing director of Diebold SA, a US-based multinational, operational in the ATM market.

In recent announcements Spescom has cited the precarious telecommunications sector as the main contributor to poor financial performance forecasts. This is said to be due to the fragmented nature of this business with trading being heavily reliant on large deals with a small customer base.

According to Spescom CEO, Tony Farah, the group selected Makore due to his technical knowledge which is augmented by a robust business background.

"Telecommunications in SA is a difficult market sector due to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding deregulation. We look forward to having a person with this mix of both technological and commercial skills join the executive team at Spescom," says Farah.
