Spescom eB expands in local government market

Johannesburg, 04 Apr 2003

JSE-listed Spescom Limited has announced that its US operation, Spescom Software Inc, formerly Altris Software, Inc, has successfully completed the implementation of eB, its integrated document, configuration and records (iDCR) management solution in the Public Works Department at the City of Fayetteville as well as in the Fire Department at the City of Wilson, both located in North Carolina.

The eB system is being used to streamline the business processes used in these departments as well as to manage all documents and engineering drawings.

Both cities are using Spescom's eB GIS Connect application to link documents stored in eB with map features located in the ESRI GIS applications that have been deployed. This interface enables users to seamlessly view a document from within a spatial map, providing rapid access to relevant documents, which improves productivity and responsiveness

With a population of 125 000, the City of Fayetteville is the sixth largest municipality in North Carolina. The Public Works Department is responsible for managing, operating and supervising the three utilities - electric, water and sanitary sewer - as well as being responsible for operating the city market stalls, and to test weights and measures. The City of Fayetteville is also using Spescom's eB CAD Connect application to manage all engineering drawings created in AutoCad, linking them to the corresponding asset displayed in the ESRI GIS application. Essentially, eB provides the platform to seamlessly link CAD drawings and spatial GIS data.

The City of Wilson's Fire Department offers state of the art service and continues to pioneer new ways to serve its more than 44 000 residents, protecting lives and property through highly trained and well-equipped fire suppression forces. The City of Wilson is using eB to improve its emergency response capabilities by having critical information, such as a fire survey or a building plan immediately available via a map interface that displays the geographic location of the building. With eB, emergency response teams can make better decisions, improving the services they provide to the community.

Carl Mostert, Spescom Software's CEO, commented: "These successful projects further demonstrate the value we bring to municipalities and councils in the local government market, both in the US and UK. Our functionally-rich and flexible eB software platform is well suited to address the different needs of these organisations, enabling them to achieve their e-government objectives."
