Spescom Software Inc, the US subsidiary of Spescom Ltd., today announced that Bechtel National Inc has purchased a site licence valued at approximately $500 000 for the use of Spescom's eB software suite during the design, construction and start-up phases of a nuclear Waste Treatment Plant (WTP) being built at the Department of Energy's Hanford site in Washington.
Bechtel National Inc is part of the Bechtel group, one of the world's largest engineering-construction companies with over 50 000 employees active on 950 projects in 67 countries.
In terms of the site licence, all users, estimated to be over 2 000, involved with the WTP project will have access to eB. The comprehensive integrated document, configuration and records management capabilities of eB will enable Bechtel to manage all the information regarding the plant throughout its lifecycle and ensure compliance with stringent regulatory demands.
Bechtel is the main Department of Energy contractor on the Hanford WTP project, a 10-year, multibillion-dollar contract that was awarded to Bechtel in December 2000.
The WTP will transform liquid radioactive waste, currently stored in 177 huge underground tanks, into a stable glass form, using a process known as vitrification. Once immobilised, the high-level radioactive waste will be shipped to a federal geological repository for permanent disposal.
