Sprint will offer 6GB of for $49.99 a month, up from 5GB, and 12GB for $79.99, up from 10GB, the company said in a statement.

Sprint said its plans deliver about 20% more data for the same price as similar plans from Verizon Wireless and AT&T. Verizon Wireless, the largest US mobile phone operator, charges $50 a month for 5GB of data.

Reuters Canada says Sprint's move does not apply to smartphone customers, and comes ahead of the holiday shopping period, often the carrier's busiest time of the year.

Verizon Wireless, a venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group, tried to position itself better for the holidays with a promotional rate that doubled its subscribers' data allowances.

Sprint still offers service plans with unlimited data usage for a flat fee to its smartphone customers.

According to PCMag, VP of pricing for Sprint Will Souder said in a statement: "Sprint is committed to delivering exceptional value to its customers, and our new 3G/4G mobile broadband plans are the latest example of that.

"Sprint gives customers more data at lower prices than competitors, so they can do more with their mobile broadband devices on Sprint's 3G and 4G networks," he adds.
