SQ1's modular print-and-apply labelling improves appearance, saves costs

Johannesburg, 12 Jun 2008

Considering the extremely wide range of manufactured goods that are delivered in shrink-wrapped pallets or large cardboard cartons, a modular approach to automatic computerised print-and-apply labelling with accurate information and label placing makes sense and offers manufacturers a host of benefits.

"Accuracy without compromising production line speeds is the most critical factor," says Ted Michel, Industrial Solutions director at JSE-listed Square One Solutions Group, the sole distributor of international Domino coding, marking and labelling equipment in South Africa.

"Quality, accurate labelling at speed translates into maximum productivity, flexibility and therefore profitability, while the modular approach ensures solutions are tailored to meet customers' specific needs," adds Michel.

The Domino M-Series end-of-the-line print-and-apply labelling systems for the in-line marking of cases and pallets is complementary to the existing Domino C-Series outer case coding equipment widely used by industry.

Built for continuous operation, the M-Series integrates easily into existing production lines and the design reflects an open standards approach for fully networked systems and communication with databases. Both USB and RS232 connections are standard and Ethernet is optional.

Michel says labels can be applied to both moving and stationary products, pallets and cases and the high resolution printing of bar codes, text and graphics is compliant with the international GS1 standard.

"The M-Series is flexible and can apply labels with blow, tamp, tamp-blow or wipe label actions in both left and right hand variants," added Michel. "The range also caters for thermal transfer/direct thermal printing and is also capable of integrating to OEM print engines. Design, set-up and Windows driver software is supplied."

The M-Series range includes the M50 Label Feed Head, the M100 (three direct thermal models), the M200 (four thermal transfer models), the M300 (RFID capable), the M400 (caters for OEM printer variants) and the M600 (caters for pallet systems).

One of the two models in the M600 ranges offers automatic 2-side pallet labelling yet requires only one stop of the pallet to label on two adjacent sides. It uses tamp/tamp-blow to apply labels of A5 portrait size with a print speed of up to 275mm/sec at resolutions of between 8 and 12 dots/mm (200-300 dpi).

"The open approach adopted by Domino in designing the M-Series allows database communication and fully networked systems for Windows-based label creation and design and the ability to download to printer via serial, USB or Ethernet connections." says Michel. "A range of accessories includes handheld terminals, fully adjustable stands and bar code validation scanners."
