A partnership of the power division of the JSE-listed Square One Solutions Group Limited and IT facilities solution provider IRT Projects has installed and commissioned uninterruptible power supply (UPS) solutions based upon APC Silcon units at two power-critical sites, in Centurion for Telkom and in Bloemfontein for the SA Post Office.
At Centurion the UPS solution involves two 20kW APC Silcon units in a parallel configuration supplying uninterrupted power to the security and fire systems of a Telkom building managed by TFMC. This arrangement ensures the critical electrical loads to the building security and fire systems are fully maintained during a mains power failure, or in the event of severe voltage variances in the form of sags or spikes.
In Bloemfontein the UPS solution is based on a single 60kW APC Silcon UPS supplying uninterrupted power to the load drawn by the data centre of the Post Bank Building of SA Post Office. The UPS ensures minimal downtime for this mission-critical IT environment.
Alex van der Westhuizen, regional manager of Square One's power division, said both systems are designed to ensure that if mains power fails, the UPS units are able to sustain the load required from their battery packs for up to 30 minutes. In normal circumstances diesel generator sets start automatically when mains power fails and supply power to the UPS units until the mains is restored.
Square One is an APC High Power Partner and recommended APC Silcon UPS units for their extreme efficiency, very high input power factors and low input distortion, which minimise running costs.
"Delta conversion online technology is also employed in these solutions, giving bottom line benefits for users through reduced installation, wiring, air conditioning, harmonic distortion and maintenance costs as well as lower energy consumption," said Van der Westhuizen.
