Two major companies, the JSE-listed transport company Super Group and the coal mining group Anglo Coal, have contracted uninterruptible power supply specialist Square One Power Solutions to provide turnkey power supply solutions in support of their data centres.
Worth a total of R1 million, both power solutions are based upon APC Silcon UPS units and diesel generator sets and have been installed and commissioned by Square One Power, the UPS specialist in the JSE-listed Square One Solutions Group, and the sole APC Hi-Power Partner in SA.
For Super Group at its Denver headquarters in Johannesburg, Square One Power installed a 40kW APC Silcon UPS unit coupled to a 400kVA diesel genset. In the event of mains power failure, the UPS and generator ensure clean power continues to be supplied to the data centre and all computers used in the building.
For the Anglo Coal data centre in Witbank, Square One Power worked closely with Anglo Coal's engineers and technical department to design the right environment for the data centre, including cooling systems to maintain temperatures at the level required for optimum operation.
"We sourced all of the equipment to meet the design specifications and installed and commissioned the cooling system, the 80kW APC Silcon unit and the 350kVA diesel generator set," said Square One Power managing director Neil Burnard.
"Cooling is as critical an element in maintaining data centre uptime as clean, secure power. We are increasingly finding that the market sees great value in our capability to provide turnkey solutions that cover all of the requirements for data centres and other crucial electronic systems."
Burnard added that the output design of the APC Silcon UPS units caters for modern downstream loads and conforms to new standards that require such loads to be power factor (PF) corrected. The units function over wide voltage and frequency ranges and are compact, small footprint products that have unity input PF and work at 95% efficiency with less than 5% input harmonic distortion.
"Our solutions based on Silcon units are able to handle crest factors of up to 10-1 as well as overloads of 200%. Because of the inherently high specification, the units are diesel generator set-friendly and exceptionally cost-efficient."
