Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units have been ordered from UPS specialist Square One Power Solutions to support critical computer server rooms at South African Revenue Services offices.
The QP4000 units are online, double conversion intelligent UPS units rated at 6kVA that meet industry standards for energy saving and zero pollution of mains power. The order was placed by the AMC IT consortium, which will install and commission the units. Eight units have been installed so far in Gauteng and it is anticipated that a further 28 units will be required to complete the exercise countrywide.
Field-proven single chip microprocessor control substantially reduces the component count, contributing to greater functionality, reliability and intelligence. The QP4000 units are also able to work over a wide range of input voltage variances so that the necessity to run on battery power is reduced. Alongside the smart battery management system, this contributes to longer battery life and economy.
"These rack-mounted units are ideal for the protection and support of standalone or networked computers, printers and peripherals," said Neil Burnard, managing director of Square One Power Solutions, the UPS specialist in the JSE-listed Square One Solutions Group.
"They are being supplied with battery backup cabinets that will ensure the SARS server computer systems continue to operate for between 30 and 50 minutes in the event of a mains power failure. This avoids data loss or data corruption and, if the mains failure prevails for an extended period, allows the server system to be correctly shut down."
Included in the contract is the supply of Square One Power's automatic power by-pass units, which are essential for mission-critical operations like SARS that cannot tolerate downtime. The by-pass units ensure that mains power is maintained to the computer system in the unlikely event of a UPS problem and also allow UPS units to be taken out of service for maintenance and repair without taking the server system offline.
