Square One wins R1.4m power deal for Pick 'n Pay's headquarters

Johannesburg, 21 Sep 2006

A state-of-the-art uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system has been installed and commissioned in a contract worth R1.4 million for Pick 'n Pay's new headquarters in Kenilworth, Cape Town, by the power division of the Square One Solutions Group, a JSE-listed ICT company.

The two Pick 'n Pay HQ buildings are each fitted with two APC Silcon UPS units, one rated at 240kW and one at 80kW, which are in turn linked to a 1000kVA standby diesel generator set installed in the basement of each building.

Square One power division account manager Nelson Torres said the two 240kW UPS units ensure clean power supply to all of the IT server rooms and equipment in both buildings. The 80kW units support the building management and security systems, supplying clean power for access control and surveillance systems.

"The UPS units ensure that the IT servers and computers are protected against power fluctuations and remain online by drawing battery power in the event of a mains power failure until power comes in from the standby diesel gensets. Overall battery back-up time is 15 minutes, which provides an ample safety margin."

Square One also installed a by-pass panel in each building. The panels offer additional security of power supply by permitting "daisy chaining" with any UPS, providing bypass to conventional AC circuits or generator-supported AC circuits and ensuring uninterrupted AC to the load even in the unlikely event of a UPS unit failure.

"They also ensure that maintenance work on a UPS installation or its replacement can be carried out without taking the user's system off line," said Torres. "This provides Pick 'n Pay with greater peace of mind in the knowledge that their essential operations will not be interrupted."
