Starship Systems, a local server systems company, has developed an enterprise network attached storage (NAS) solution that uses controller technology.
According to the company, the Nebula Enterprise NAS solution can be used in any environment, including a virtualised one.
Starship Systems' MD, Herman van Heerden, says the solution was developed to provide local companies with a cost-effective storage alternative to the expensive imported offerings of international vendors.
“We found that most companies are using the same hardware, but all that is missing is a software solution that pulls it all together. Our controller is essentially the final piece of the puzzle that glues the solution together,” says Van Heerden.
Van Heerden explains that the controller offers an efficient way of configuring and managing storage, with the choice of adding soft RAID to the existing hardware RAID configuration, or just adding a bunch of discs together.
“The solution is bundled in a server rack that fits neatly into the server room. An Intel-based unit houses the core storage, with SATA discs configured in any number of chosen hardware RAID arrays to allow for parity, redundancy and failure protection. Pooling dual Gigabit network interface cards allows for fast access to the storage, and the prevention of single point of failure,” Van Heerden adds.
According to Starship Systems, the storage capacity can be increased by adding another storage unit to the equation, and once plugged in, the controller allows for the new storage to be configured and utilised.
Van Heerden notes that the dual Gigabit switches ensure fast networking, allowing for super-quick disc access when loss of power occurs. Dual 1500VA units carry the solution or allow the rack to shut down normally if the power out persists.
