A team of university graduates has established an online events coverage service, specialising in weddings, conferences, and sporting and corporate functions.
Event online started as an experiment at the Rhodes University New Media Lab and has been adapted into a business idea, says company director Gary Howes.
"We`re taking the latest in new media and mobile technology and using it to build Web sites that dynamically cover a range of events," he says.
Two months since its inception, Event online is pitching ideas to companies, designing interactive corporate Web sites and growing its client base, he says.
"We really believe we`re entering the industry at the right time - just as people are beginning to realise the potential of new technology," says technical director Duncan Alfers.
The event-specific site will offer interactive features relating to the event, such as competitions and forums, as well as provide multimedia coverage of the event using video and audio streaming, digital pictures and mobile applications, he says.
Alfers adds the Event online concept offers benefits for people organising or attending a particular event. "It can be used for logistical planning before the event - such as a Web portal for invitation replies - and provides easy access to information, like event programmes, background information and maps.
"What we do is plan how to best combine this technology to build a Web site for a specific event, effectively creating a virtual event online," he explains.
