In collaboration with Sony Electronics, Sony BMG and PlayStation, Blu-ray will enable Ster-Kinekor to aggressively target a wider audience. This is according to Nelmari Claassens, marketing manager for Sony Pictures at Ster-Kinekor Home Entertainment.

As of May, Sony Pictures has 70 titles available in the Blu-ray format, with approximately five new Blu-ray titles, including TV series, being added each month, she says.

Claassens maintains that with over 28 000 PlayStation 3 owners to target, Blu-ray movies have an above average chance of success.

Marketing plans include two large campaigns later in the year, the biggest taking place around Christmas time, she continues.

Other markets also hold interest for Sony and Ster-Kinekor. Despite SA's constraints, the companies are also exploring the growing mobile movie market. "We are keeping a keen eye on developments and are in discussions with major role players."

Discussing movies, Claasens agrees that they have the advantage of convenience but she does not see them impacting the Blu-ray market. "If you want to experience true high-definition Blu-ray, you need a true high-definition home theatre system and that includes physical products."

A single Blu-ray disk can hold up to 25GB of , with the dual layer doubling this capacity, she notes.

Named after the 'blue' ray or laser that it uses, as opposed to the red laser of DVDs, the Blu-ray's crisper, clearer images and interactive features, as well as the 7.1 surround sound enhanced audio experience, are what make it so exciting, she explains.
