Storage architecture goes large

EMC is aiming to do for enterprise storage what VMware has already done for virtual servers, reports vnunet.

The company has introduced a line of high-end Symmetrix storage products based on a building block design that can start small and scale up to support the largest virtual centre infrastructure.

Available immediately, the Symmetrix V-Max and V-Max SE storage arrays are based on a new virtual matrix architecture that EMC says can scale up to hundreds of thousands of terabytes of storage, and is capable of supporting hundreds of thousands of virtual machines.

Iomega opens box of tricks

Iomega has bounded into the SME NAS and iSCSI storage market with a sub-$1 800 box, says The Register.

With this move it is taking on all other low-end NAS suppliers and signifying that unified file and block storage is the way to go.

The StorCenter Pro ix4-200r is a 1U rack-mount, 4-bay, 4TB (with hot-swappable Sata drives), gigabit Ethernet product, offering both file and block-level access.

Cleversafe delivers 'storage-as-a-service'

Cleversafe says new data storage appliances and software upgrades for its dispersed storage network technology will offer a energy-efficient and cost-effective way to store and distribute exabytes of unstructured data, reports TMCnet

The company says its technology delivers 'storage-as-a-service,' as it provides reliability, built-in and privacy more cheaply than traditional storage methods.

Also, paving the way for the next generation of content delivery networks (CDNs), the company has released Smart Client to help CDNs overcome the difficulty of switching servers or networks if they slow down during delivery.
