Storage systems grow 7.7%

ComputerWorldUK reports.

This is according to research firm IDC, which found disk storage systems grew 7.7%. The total disk storage systems market, which includes the server market, grew by 8.2% to $31.1 billion in 2011 compared to 2010.

IDC's quarterly storage tracker found that the total disk storage systems capacity shipped reached 6 279 petabytes, and grew 22.4% year-over-year, The Register writes.

Storage sales exhibited strong growth during the fourth quarter of last year, with storage-focused vendors doing much better than their system vendor counterparts, CRN says.

Vendors such as EMC, NetApp and Hitachi, whose primary business was storage, took market share away from competitors such as IBM and HP, which sell both servers and storage, leaving Dell the only server vendor to actually grow its storage business during the quarter, according to IDC.
