CMS, local StorageTek representative, has announced the availability of the 9840 tape drive for IBM`s AS/400 midrange server platform. The 9840 drive delivers the industry`s best price/performance for automated and manual backup and recovery solutions.
The 9840 tape drive provides instant value for the high-end of the AS/400 market by allowing customers to attach AS/400 processors to their StorageTek tape libraries with no additional investment in tape automation. Gartner Group estimates that more than 500 000 AS/400 systems are in place, and expects this figure to grow to 650 000 by the end of 2001.
"We see the AS/400 market as not only large, but grossly under served with the technology that currently predominates," says Pieter Engelbrecht, sales support manager of CMS. "It is time for customers to have a powerful alternative."
The 9840 provides superior backup times and business recovery speed for the AS/400 market with throughput of up to 14 MBps. Native capacity of the initial 9840 cartridge is 20 GB, expanding to 80 GB with 4:1 compression. Early customer testing demonstrated that overall throughput for the 9840 is up to 30% faster than comparable competitive offerings, while costing less. StorageTek provides high-performance storage solutions for small, mid-sized and enterprise computing environments, and library sizes in capacities from 15 to 6 000 cartridges.
StorageTek is represented in South Africa by CMS, a subsidiary of MGX Holdings.
