Legato Systems, a leader in the enterprise storage management software market, StorageTek and Crossroads Systems, a developer and manufacturer of fibre channel storage routers, have announced a strategic initiative to deliver SAN-based serverless backup and to drive industry standards for intelligent data movement in storage area networks (SANs).
This initiative will provide customers with the ability to move critical data directly from disk to tape without server intervention and without impacting production networks. The initiative uses technology from all three companies, and is based on the emerging third-party copy standard being developed by the Storage Networking Industry Alliance (SNIA).
This standard is structured around the Celestra architecture from Intelliguard Software for moving data within a SAN. Legato has announced its intention to acquire Intelliguard Software.
Customers must typically back up from disk by going over their network and through their server. This can impact the performance of business applications. This serverless backup solution eliminates the need for using either the production network or server for data movement. In this way, a customer with StorageTek OPENstorage disks, tape libraries, and StorageNet SANs, including Crossroad`s storage routers, could use Intelliguard`s Celestra software and Legato NetWorker to back up their systems at any time during the day without impacting the servers on the LAN.
Providing this kind of data movement intelligence in the SAN is the next step in SAN evolution. Legato, StorageTek, and Crossroads are working together to make this a reality. To facilitate open SAN solutions, the companies will also promote open industry standards for data movement through APIs to SAN-based data movers.
"Serverless backup is the next key deliverable in Legato`s vision of the information utility. This alliance brings together three industry leaders focused on delivering real and timely value to companies that require seamless, open backup," says Kent Smith, COO for Legato.
"Data movement without host intervention is a strategic initiative at StorageTek, and our work with Legato and Crossroads is an important step towards our goal of open, intelligent, and integrated SAN solutions," says Joan Wrabetz, VP and GM, SAN Operations Business Group, StorageTek. "Serverless backup is a strategic intelligent SAN application that will give our customers much simpler and more efficient storage management."
Legato is the only provider of a fully integrated storage management solution based on a consistent, scalable, and manageable architecture. The company`s software is designed to ensure distributed data and applications remain available to users by minimising operational downtime - planned and unplanned.
The company`s software has become the recognized de facto storage management standard with the largest installed based of more than 37 000 customers, protecting more than 4 million systems.
Over the next five years, the integration of networks and storage will deliver startling advances in the way data is stored, managed and accessed. Crossroads, the de facto standard in storage routing, is at the forefront of these efforts. Crossroads delivers high-availability, system-independent storage networking solutions. The Crossroads Verified SAN Solutions Guide (CV-SAN), available on Crossroads` Web site, provides tested SAN configurations though the Crossroads Interoperability Labs to simplify systems design and installation. OEMs such as Compaq, Dell, Hewlett Packard and StorageTek have partnered with Crossroads to provide these solutions to their customers. The company`s headquarters are located in Austin, Texas. StorageTek is represented in South Africa by CMS, a company in the MGX Holdings group.
