StorageTek receives awards for exemplary product and proven SAN solution interoperability

Johannesburg, 19 May 2000

International storage giant StorageTek, locally represented by CMS, an MGX subsidiary, was recognised at this years` Networld + Interop conference for exemplary server storage product and storage area (SAN) solution interoperability by both industry influencers and customers who use StorageTek products.

StorageTek`s TimberWolf 9738 tape library received the coveted 2000 Product of the Year Award from Network Magazine for best server storage product. In addition, StorageTek`s Access Hub, part of the StorageNet family of products, was awarded "Tachyon Tested" certification by Agilent Technologies, a subsidiary of Hewlett-Packard, for its proven advanced compatibility with Agilent`s Tachyon - Channel host adapters.

The editors of Network Magazine praised the features of StorageTek`s TimberWolf 9738 no-compromise, entry-level library solution. Customers seeking ways to solve departmental and smaller-site storage problems can rely on the TimberWolf 9738 which, according to editors, "hits this mark, with very high data transfer rates, robust scalability features and an economical price."

"Network Magazine`s ranking of the TimberWolf 9738 as No. 1 in its class proves StorageTek`s leadership and commitment to delivering superior tape technology across a wide spectrum of environments," says Pieter Engelbrecht, product marketing manager of CMS. "The 9738 - which is designed primarily for client-server environments - is based on the same technology as our mainframe systems, and expands the StorageTek tape library family technology into the data intensive and fast access storage marketplace."

"The TimberWolf 9738 features the functionality required for both active and archived data; it delivers the performance and reliability that is required in SANs and other shared, mixed-platform storage environments. It takes just seconds to access or transfer active data, making it an ideal storage system for both backup data and data-intensive applications such as document management, check imaging and medical industry applications."

With its proven capability to work with Agilent`s Tachyon host adapter to meet or exceed Fibre Channel basic functionality, StorageTek`s Access Hub has earned the Tachyon Tested designation.

"StorageTek`s commitment to interoperability standards was evident throughout the comprehensive testing conducted in the Tachyon test lab," said Julian Elliott, general manager of Agilent`s High-Speed I/O Business Unit. "StorageTek`s Access Hub easily passed Agilent`s rigorous stress-test ensuring a combined SAN solution that is not only interoperable, but highly functional."

The StorageTek Access Hub is a Fibre Channel-based solution addressing the interconnect and scalability requirements of SAN environments. Access Hub is a high-speed, high-bandwidth, serial technology solution for connecting servers to storage devices within SANs.

"According to InformationWeek Research`s recent study, 50 percent of the 300 corporations polled plan to implement SANs this year," said Engelbrecht. "These companies want to be able to select the best SAN solutions and integrate them with the products they already have in place.

Interoperability is critical for rapid implementation and return on investment. Our partnership with Agilent underscores our commitment to provide a strong foundation of interoperable Fibre Channel SAN solutions for our customers, OEMs and system integrators."
