StorageTek tackles data explosion with enhanced VSM

Johannesburg, 08 Nov 1999

StorageTek has announced general availability of Virtual Storage Manager (VSM) system 2.0, an enhanced version of the company`s integrated nearline, enterprise disk and solution that maximises total storage capacity while mitigating the need for extra disk or tape.

With increased performance, significant improvements in the installation process and expanded mainframe operating system support, VSM 2.0 protects customers` investments in their initial VSM system, StorageTek libraries and TimberLine tape drives. Additionally, by combining high-performance tape with disk, VSM 2.0 offers sub-second response times at a fraction of the cost (at least 100 times less) of disk-only solutions.

"Virtual tape solutions deliver significant, measurable benefits to end-users in the areas of reduced backup and restore time, reduced batch windows, floor space reduction, improved tape utilisation, and reduced cost of management," said John McArthur, program director for storage systems research for International Corporation. "By supporting MVS 5.2, StorageTek has extended the benefits of virtual tape to a broader range of users."

StorageTek has also announced that both VSM system 1.0 and VSM system 2.0 will support StorageTek`s new-generation 9840 tape drives. Enhanced performance in the VSM subsystem reduces virtual mount times to less than a second versus 1-3 seconds with VSM 1.0. In addition, with response times reduced from tens of seconds in an environment to sub-second, customers can reduce their batch production processing windows by as much as 50%. Beyond 1999, scheduled VSM improvements include increases in capacity and performance, enhanced disaster recovery capability, high availability options and advanced policy management.

StorageTek is represented in South Africa by CMS, a subsidiary of MGX Holdings.
