StorageTek unveils hardest-working tape drive

Johannesburg, 29 Jan 2002

Local StorageTek distributor MGX has announced the availability of the StorageTek T9840B tape drive. Designed for high performance, non-stop use, the T9840B provides data access speed at nearly double the rate of the 9840 tape drive. It also offers sustained data transfer rates for transaction-intensive and time-critical applications.

"The T9840B tape drive gives customers a fast transfer rate, providing relief from ever decreasing back-up windows and enabling the fastest access to data in the industry," says Dan Mc Mahon, CEO operations and sales at MGX. "Customers also benefit from the drive`s reliability and robustness as well as the flexibility of connectivity across all major platforms."

The T9840B tape drive equips storage-intensive users with a 19MB per second uncompressed data transfer rate and random access to data in less than 12 seconds.

These improvements make it a cost-saving option for customers who require tape for backup, recovery and on-demand access to a wide range of data. Because it is equipped with the industry`s first 2Gb fabric aware, Fibre Channel interface, it fully exploits the latest 200MB per second SAN infrastructures and the most popular Fibre Channel hardware components. It is also particularly suitable for SAN and NAS environments.

By including the ability to read tapes created on the more than 50 000 StorageTek 9840 tape drives installed in the market today, the T9840B tape drive offers significant investment protection to current customers. In addition, the tape drive can also be integrated into StorageTek`s L180, L700e and PowderHorn tape libraries, enhancing customers` scalability options.

"The additional advantages of the T9840B tape drive are its robustness, reliability and value," adds Mc Mahon. "With its speed, low maintenance, reliable media and scalable automation, it is aimed at the disappearing back-up window, fast access restore for business resumption, and the use of active tape to minimise the runaway growth of online storage."
