Strategic considerations for millennium-strength data warehousing

Johannesburg, 27 Oct 1999

Mission-critical enterprise data repositories ensure the organization, storage, retrieval, security, and integrity of data and give way to vast data warehouses that can contain enormous amounts of data while acting as high-performance processors, and mission-critical application support.

"Successful businesses rely on mission-critical enterprise data repositories to supply the information necessary to make crucial decisions and to ensure that employees have the tools to successfully perform daily tasks," says Andrea Lodolo, technical director for Global Technology Delivery Solutions at Computer Associates Africa. In order to support industrial strength business applications data repositories must be capable of storing and organizing enormous amounts of data, while ensuring the security and integrity of that data.

"Today, businesses are building solutions to manage their information, recognizing it as a key competitive asset. But just managing information is not enough; to gain competitive advantage companies must find new ways to glean knowledge from it and share this knowledge across the enterprise," Lodolo explains.

"We can accrue great benefits if we really leverage the value hidden in the information we have accumulated over the years," he says. There are companies whose entire business model is based on collecting this type of information. They sell products like books, music, video and consumer electronics substantially below cost, taking the position by giving away all this product at a loss they have the chance to cultivate relationships with their customers that allows them to build up an information base about people. The value of this information is immense.

"The increasingly rapid pace of business means that companies have to gather, analyse and leverage information in "Internet time". This requires application lifecycle solutions that support iterative processes; solutions that know exactly what is happening in any part of the lifecycle at any given point in time. These solutions must also continuously control every aspect of the application lifecycle, including business requirements, analysis and design, construction, testing, deployment, etc," Lodolo states. An Application Lifecycle strategy must be based on the most powerful technology for defining business requirements, providing the ability to create applications that leverage all the information that might possibly be relevant, regardless of its form and its location.

Companies are discovering that the sole remaining source of some of their most valuable intellectual assets are trapped deep in various layers of application code and data structures, according to Lodolo. "They recognize that this knowledge and its effective application towards business goals is what truly differentiates them from their business rivals." It becomes key to leverage this knowledge in other areas across the enterprise.

"The strategic acquisition of PLATINUM gives CA a unique ability to deliver on this premise," Lodolo states. "CA`s individual solutions, such as Catalysis, Paradigm Plus, ADdvantage TND, Repository, Endevor, MasterIT, ERwin, EnterpriseDBA, Unicenter TNG, Neugents, and e-Trust, individually offer tremendous benefits to our clients. When they are used together and integrated on top of the Jasmine ii Intelligent Infrastructure they deliver unparalleled value - every aspect of business goal and requirements definition, analysis and design, construction, testing, deployment and management is covered by CA solutions. And these solutions cover not only the applications, but also the data and the underlying systems and networks," he says.

Lodolo concludes: "CA`s goal is to provide the ability to trace the movement of data as it moves through the organization, to assist in building better re-use, design and implementation. ADvantage TND is the right solution for competitive companies who must adapt to change in `Internet Time`."
