Strong project management - a contributor to e-learning success

Johannesburg, 20 May 2003

IOCORE`s value proposition for its e-learning clients has grown steadily; it not only includes the most comprehensive set of solutions, but also incorporates a sound project management methodology to ensure project success.

IOCORE, an IT service provider with a broad stable of e-learning solutions including Top Class, Centra, Oracle i-Learning and SAP solutions, is in a position to recommend the best possible e-learning fit with a client`s existing technology infrastructure, training and business drivers.

At the same time, IOCORE`s e-learning implementations comprise a comprehensive, customised business and adoption strategy that pave the way for the successful introduction of e-learning to an organisation. Project management services are the glue that binds everything together.

"As IOCORE`s e-learning team, we looked at existing project management methodologies to identify one that would suit the solutions we implement," says Debbie Fradd, Project Manager, IOCORE e-learning. "There were no suitable methodologies available, so we based ours on known methods but integrated our knowledge and experience to customise it for a perfect fit."

In the past, project management as a discipline has shown its value in construction and engineering in particular, but now permeates every industry, and holds particular value for the IT environment, one that is fraught with issues of budget, client expectations, time - and resource limitations.

According to Fradd, strong project management is often the difference between implementation success and failure. "Customers are increasingly seeing the value of including project management as part of the solution upfront. We sometimes experience initial resistance to our approach as project management is the first component to be cut in the budget as it is not yet perceived to yield tangible benefits. But clients soon realise that a lack of control can be even more costly to the project."

"Our methodology, and any strong project management methodology for that matter, ensures tight control right from the start. It ensures that the scope, costs, time and expectations are well managed, all the while taking the organisation`s business focus into account," explains Fradd. "At the end of the day, even the most reluctant client eventually appreciates the benefits associated with strong project management. "

The business case for an e-learning implementation is typically to achieve more training, more effectively and at less cost. "By applying project management methods, we are able to keep this and other business objectives in focus at all times so that the project deliverables and goals are aligned with the organisation`s long-term strategy," says Fradd. "Because we are solution-focused, we ensure the implementation is in the long-term, and that the client can continue to apply those aspects of the methodology that are still relevant on completion of the project."

IOCORE positions itself as a global organisation of top IT intellect which delivers business benefit through information technology. As a result, the company places a very strong emphasis on excellent project management in all of its business areas. The company has established a project management special interest group (SIG) to further the cause and to foster a learning environment for project managers and team members alike. The SIG meets regularly to discuss issues such as selling the discipline of project management to clients, roles and expectations in the project teams, adopting the same methods to ensure that the organisation remains on the same page and exploring the project management knowledge areas. These knowledge areas include the management of integration, scope, time, cost, quality, human resources, communications, and procurement, and are consistent with international project management standards.
