Students build IM system in one day

Nineteen high school students assembled at Princeton campus to build an instant messaging (IM) system, the university says. The project was part of Materials Science Day, an event sponsored by the Princeton Institute for the Science and Technology of Materials and the Princeton Centre for Complex Materials.

To create the IM system, the students used a visual programming language and connected computers to create a circuit board. The technology is similar to that used in -optic cables. The difference is light signals are transmitted through the air rather than through cables, the report says.

System determines contact`s availability

Tello has launched Presence, a cross-platform instantaneous communication system that allows users to determine what device contacts are using, says Unstrung.

With Presence, users can locate a desired contact, and see whether the contact is connected with a landline, mobile phone or logged on to an IM , and then connect with the contact`s device.

According to Tello CEO Doug Renert, Tello is unique in that it allows users to see who on the list of contacts is available at any moment and to collaborate instantly with them.

Yahoo, IBM achieve IM interoperability

Yahoo and IBM have sealed an agreement that will enable customers of Lotus Sametime 7.5 to interact with Yahoo! Messenger users worldwide, net4now reports.

In addition to exchanging text instant messages, users will be able to see their friends` online presence and manage their contact list by easily adding or deleting people.
