Full story:
EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) has announced it has been named the number one storage solution shipped in 2012 for major enterprise applications in IDC's annual Storage User Demand Study. EMC was number one in storage solutions deployed in Oracle environments for the second consecutive year, and in 2012, shipped nearly 2x more terabytes than the next closest storage vendor in Oracle environments.
The study estimates how many terabytes of external storage systems were shipped in support of top enterprise applications and support of IT infrastructure and revenue of top storage systems suppliers associated with these shipments.
EMC shipments ranked number one for Oracle, Microsoft Exchange and SharePoint, SAP application environments as well as business intelligence and analytics, home directories, VDI and virtual server and industry-specific applications. EMC VNX and EMC VMAX are the leading storage systems in the IDC study among storage systems from NetApp, IBM, HP,Hitachi, Oracle, and Dell.
The IDC study also estimates that just under half of all the external storage system capacity shipped in the first half of 2012 was in support of major enterprise application environments such as Oracle, Microsoft, and SAP, slightly under 40% of capacity was shipped for major segments of IT infrastructure support, including home directories, virtual desktop and virtual server infrastructure, as well as content depot and public cloud environments, and the rest going to other data use cases.
Through continued innovation in storage system performance, availability and ease-of-use, EMC continues to address the needs of enterprise application environments such as Oracle, helping maximise the value from Oracle software investments. EMC's recent storage platform announcements and Oracle-specific solutions continue this trend for customers.
Continued innovation for Oracle customers include:
* The EMC VMAX combined with XtremSWCache delivers 3.7 million sustained read IOPS with service times under a half-millisecond for Oracle OLTP and - for Oracle Data Warehouses - 32GB/s read scans and 21TB/h data loading throughput.
* The new VNX system delivers 735 193 IOPS for Oracle and SQL OLTP, and with XtremSWCache technology, users can see an additional 30% improvement.
* Leveraging VNX, Cisco UCS was the first system to process more than one million employee pay-cheques per hour on the Oracle E-Business Suite Applications R12 benchmark.
* EMC Storage Monitoring plug-ins for Oracle DBAs - allow direct monitoring of EMC storage through Oracle Enterprise Manager interface - delivering faster performance, capacity and availability information about EMC storage to make DBAs more efficient in tuning and optimising Oracle.
Customer quotes
Grant Dawson, CTO, T2 Systems
"T2 Systems is a leader in cloud-based enterprise parking management solutions. Processing more than one billion Oracle database transactions a day, a rate that's growing by a half-billion transactions per month, we looked to the VSPEX solution to provide the high availability we need, while handling the growth we anticipate. With the VSPEX solution, we can dynamically allocate resources to virtualised Oracle, and the way the VSPEX solution is designed means that we have full redundancy and the data is always available."
Dennis Robinson, Director of Technical Infrastructure, Genex Services
"Genex Services is a leading provider of integrated managed care services providing comprehensive care management to clients. To improve performance, enable disaster recovery, and support growth, we transformed our IT environment with Oracle and EMC. Our results from virtualising Oracle have been very positive, primarily due to the improved speed and agility of our environment. In the past, it was costly and would take weeks to deliver a new Oracle server. Now we can move much faster to serve our customers and meet the needs of our users."
