Summit boosts laptop rentals, sales

Johannesburg, 04 Sep 2002

While some retailers are complaining that the World Summit on Sustainable Development is not bringing in extra revenue, laptop and accessories retailer, The Notebook Company (www.notebook.co.za) says rentals of laptops are "running at 100% capacity".

Said Christopher Riley, CEO of The Notebook Company: "We did not expect it at all. However, I believe this is part of the problem we have in SA. A lot of individuals and companies expect to receive business on a silver platter. To be able to be sustainable you need to work for it. Sustenance can definitely not develop from handouts."

Riley said that while the company normally runs on average at 60% capacity on rentals, it has been running at full capacity for the duration of the summit.

"We have, in fact, had to turn some clients away - something we really hate doing. We just did not have enough in stock. We just can`t keep pace with the demand for rental units. It was really unexpected."

Riley said the demand for the sale of laptops, and for repair work, is also "significantly up".
