Sun accelerates, simplifies roll-out of mobile data services

Johannesburg, 11 Nov 2003

Sun Microsystems has announced two new technologies and a programme to assist mobile operators develop and implement new Java-based consumer and enterprise mobile content and services for 2.5G and 3G handsets.

Sun Content Delivery Server, Java Device Test Suite and the Java Mobility Advantage Program are expected to accelerate time-to-market and time-to-money for mobile content offerings, says Sean O'Hare, Java engineer at Sun Microsystems SA.

"Sun now provides a complete solution that allows operators to build and manage their own mobile content delivery business. The modular components of the programme also allow operators to customise mobile content delivery platforms to meet specific business requirements," he says.

"The introduction of Sun's Java Mobility Advantage Program and new products help solidify Sun's position as a leading technology provider to the mobile market," says Scott Ellison, programme director, Wireless and Mobile Communications of IDC.

"Given that Java is supported by all major mobile device vendors and operators, and is the most common cross-platform mobile device application environment, Sun is positioned to play a central role in the rapid evolution of wireless data services," Ellison adds.
