Sun Microsystems is attempting to turnaround its recent disappointing financial results through a new alliance with Fujitsu to develop joint networking product lines.
Earlier today, at the Sun Network conference held in Shanghai, Sun Microsystems announced the expansion of their 20-year strategic relationship with Fujitsu. The two companies will now work together on developing their Solaris and SPARC-based server product lines. The two product lines will have come together by mid-2006 and the resulting line is code named the
Advanced Product Line (APL).
During the transition period, Sun and Fujitsu will work together to quickly implement arrangements to make each company's products available for distribution for the other company. The agreement brings together Sun's knowledge of the Internet and network computing, and Fujitsu's expertise in mission-critical computing.
"Sun continues to grow the broadest operating platforms on earth, spanning Java and the Java enterprise system, the Solaris operating environment running industry standard x86 servers, up into the mainframe environment, and a newly expanded SPARC family, providing the highest performance computing infrastructure for the largest diversity of network workloads," says Jonathan Schwartz, president and CEO of Sun.
