Sun Microsystems has stated that enhancements to its highly available SunPlex environment for Oracle9i Real Application Clusters make this solution a very compelling value proposition, in providing customers with greater performance and scalability.
According to Dumisani Mtoba, senior systems engineer at Sun Microsystems SA, Sun and Oracle have in place strategic joint escalation centres - staffed by experts from the respective companies - equipped to resolve technical issues that arise from the complexities involved in clustered configurations.
"A further advantage is that while competitors are compelled to source hardware, operating systems and software from various vendors, Sun provides these essential elements internally.
"As far as the SunPlex framework is concerned customer interaction need only be through one source for all system requirements," explains Mtoba.
"Oracle's RAC solution provides for a lower-cost, high-availability hardware configuration which ensures that customers can gain the maximum return on their investment in server technology," says Oracle's Channel Sales Manager, Jacqui Gogele. "Scaling large databases, in the past, has often presented customers with the problem of replacing existing servers with larger units. With RAC companies can simply add another server to its server cluster without reconfiguring."
Oracle and Sun have jointly been developing and deploying clustered solutions for many years thus providing a stable and well developed infrastructure. The two companies have jointly developed the software and have the tools at their disposal enabling rapid implementation.
"Together, Sun and Oracle continue to deliver tightly integrated, industry-first solutions to give companies the competitive advantage necessary in today's rapidly changing business environment," says Mtoba.
He adds that Sun's server product line has been built with so much redundancy and other high availability features that, for example, if there is a failure on the path to cluster shared disk, then the system will use a different path. The component that has failed can be removed and repaired while the node continues running.
The SunPlex environment with Oracle9i Real Application Clusters is designed to deliver the highest level of availability for customers and application services.
"The powerful combination of our advanced cluster technology with Oracle's industry-leading Oracle9i RAC database will help customers gain real-time access to its databases and improve the company's overall customer service and bottom line," says Andy Ingram, vice-president of Solaris marketing, Sun Microsystems.
