Sun attracts active server pages developers to Solaris 8

Offers more platforms to deploy Web development
Johannesburg, 18 Jun 2001

The ability of developers to create a more open and accessible Web environment has received a major boost, following Sun Microsystems announcement of Chili!Soft ASP software, a cross-platform implementation of active server pages (ASPs).

Lodewyk de Beer, enterprise architect at Sun Microsystems in SA, says that currently the majority of Web developers in SA comprise Microsoft developers using ASPs, which restricts them from the number of platforms on which they can deploy their programs.

"The Solaris 8 Operating Environment which is recognised as the Internet's leading platform for power and scalability, can now be used by a wider cross-section of developers with the availability of Chili!Soft ASP software.

"It's no secret that we want access to as many Web developers as possible and with Chili!Soft ASP, we are giving them access to an enterprise architecture offering more platforms to deploy their developments.

"Equally important, we see Chili!Soft on top of Solaris 8 as a move by Sun to support technologies from competing vendors to facilitate and create a more open and accessible web environment," says De Beer

"Sun Chili!Soft ASP software has become the de facto standard in enabling ASP technology on Solaris, Linux, and other Unix platforms," says John Shell, senior product manager at Sun Microsystems Inc. "We are offering choice to millions of ASP developers who are seeking access to new markets and new platforms."

IT professionals in enterprises and service providers are building dynamic, database-driven applications and Web sites using scripting languages and ASP-based Rapid Application Development tools, such as Microsoft FrontPage, Macromedia DreamWeaver UltraDev, and Adobe GoLive!

These managers can now leverage and extend their current talent pool, gaining reliability and scalability by deploying their applications on the Solaris 8 Operating Environment through Sun Chili!Soft ASP software and FrontPage server extensions, which are included with the product.

Sun Chili!Soft ASP software provides ASP developers extensibility through direct access to the Java object-oriented environment through the use of Sun Chili!Beans, a technology that allows any Java class to be accessed via Microsoft scripting languages.

Developers can now access the cross-platform flexibility and scalability of Java technology, while still applying the Component Object Model (COM) interface that they are accustomed to.
