Sun competes with MS

Sun Microsystems is counting on the ubiquitous nature of Java to help its JavaFX technology compete in the rich application space against rivals Adobe Systems and Microsoft, says Computerworld.

A browser plug-in for JavaFX will be featured in the Java SE (Standard Edition) 6 Update 10 release due this fall. Both Adobe, with its Flash platform, and Microsoft, with Silverlight, are offering plug-in platforms for rich Internet applications.

But Sun plans to provide the industry-leading rich client with JavaFX, said Param Singh, Sun senior director of Java marketing. The Java runtime helps make this possible, he stressed during an interview at the JavaOne conference.

Young uses Java

Neil Young has compiled 45 years of archives about his music career on Blu-ray discs using Java technology, says eWeek.com.

Young joined Sun Microsystems CEO and president Jonathan Schwartz and Rich Green, the company's executive VP for , on stage during the JavaOne conference opening keynote on 6 May to announce the new archive project and demonstrate some of the interactive features of his upcoming Blu-ray disc box set.

Young also announced his collaboration with Sun and Reprise/Warner Bros for the release of the upcoming Neil Young Archive series on Blu-ray disc, powered by Java technology.

EnterpriseDB releases plug-in

EnterpriseDB released a plug-in for Postgres Studio that creates an AJAX-enabled Java application based on a Postgres database table or schema, says JDJ.

Postgres Studio is a graphical database administration console that is built on the pgAdmin foundation and only available as part of Postgres Plus. The plug-in generates Java source code, scripts, NetBeans, and Eclipse project files for screen-based applications that can create, read, update, and delete records in target Postgres databases.

The plug-in extensively leverages the JBoss Seam Framework, creating a pre-configured Seam environment for Postgres Plus.
