Sun cures capacity ailments at Discovery Health

Johannesburg, 07 Nov 2001

Health insurance company Discovery Health has expanded its IT capacity and reduced its processing burden. The company has more than tripled its processing power following the installation of a Sun MicrosystemsSun Fire 6800 CPU.

"The addition is expected to provide sufficient processing power for the company's IT needs for at least the next two years at its current growth rate," says Patrice Bouic, deputy GM IT Networks at Discovery Health.

He says users are "ecstatic" with the performance that the 750MHz Sun Fire 6800 delivers, accelerating batch jobs three times faster than the previous system and providing phenomenal throughput.

Discovery Health is part of the First Rand group, one of SA's largest financial services companies administering more than one million lives.

Bouic says the in-house developed administration software systems, accessed by over 2 300 users in Johannesburg and at regional centres, have been ported to the Sun Fire leaving the call centre, data warehousing and Internet domains on the Sun Star Fire E10K.

"The Discovery Live administration software took up about half the capacity of the previous system so by porting the domain to the new Sun Fire, both machines are freed up to run at maximum speeds," says Bouic.

The project has also allowed Discovery Health to replicate its call centre for redundancy purposes nightly, ensuring that this mission critical business function is never impacted.

Sun partner and Discovery Health's third-party IT vendor, Comparex Africa installed the Sun Fire.
