Sun Microsystems has expanded its x86-based product line with the debut of two highly affordable, rack-optimised systems. The Sun Fire V60x and V65x systems offer a choice of either Sun's enterprise-class Solaris x86 Platform Edition or Red Hat Linux and Sun's Java Virtual Machine (JVM).
According to Tertius Bezuidenhout, national systems engineer manager at Sun Microsystems SA, the new systems deliver unprecedented opportunities for reducing costs on a secure platform for the deployment of applications. "The release of these systems meets Sun's goal of delivering performance computing solutions that are truly affordable," he says.
The Sun Fire V60x and Sun Fire V65x systems are ideal for critical infrastructure applications such as Web serving, firewall, workgroup or database server and high performance computing clustering. The servers offer the best performance in their class according to industry benchmarks, yet cost between 30% to 50% less than competitive products.
Bezuidenhout explains that Sun is increasingly focusing on the x86 server market with a strategy built around delivering enterprise-class systems with high performance, aggressive pricing and a total commitment to Solaris and Linux.
"Sun's x86 strategy addresses issues of fragility, insecurity and expense while providing the added benefit of a single customer interface for service, support, software and hardware," he says.
"Businesses are tired of the fragility, insecurity and expense associated with Windows. Sun's x86 strategy addresses these issues while providing the added benefit of a single customer interface for service, support, software and hardware," he says.
Based on Intel's Xeon processors, the Sun Fire V60x and V65x expand Sun's x86 product line which includes the LX50 server.
x86 Blade servers, part of the Sun Fire Blade Platform, are scheduled for imminent release.
