Sun Microsystems is shipping two new storage drives that double the storage capacity in the same footprint giving customers the opportunity to lower their storage systems cost by half.
The new drives make the Sun StorEdge 3900 and 6900 the most cost-effective and high performing midrange to enterprise storage platform for the Solaris Operating Environment (OE).
Kobus Landsberg, senior systems engineer at Sun Microsystems in SA, says locally there is a big drive by companies to consolidate their data centre floor space while reducing power and cooling costs.
The new 181GB and 36GB 15 000RPM drives deliver greater, more efficient performance to midrange and enterprise storage customers.
"The addition to our midrange systems will help more than double the capacity in the same footprint, from an estimated 11TB to more than 29TB in a maximum configuration," says Landsberg.
This solution, he says, helps drive down costs across the IT environment, from acquisition and administration, to maintenance and software licensing, while keeping power consumption at parity with lower capacity systems.
Recent industry analyst reports estimated the midrange market for storage to be approximately $5 billion to $6 billion. Sun's leadership in this area is demonstrated by an increasing demand for the midrange storage systems.
In the five months since introducing the Sun StorEdge 3900 and 6900 series, Sun has sold over 700 terabytes of storage capacity. The addition of the 181GB and 36GB 15 000RPM disk drives to the Sun StorEdge 3900 and 6900 series is expected to enhance the performance of the storage solutions by 50%, while response times for random read and write are expected to increase by more than 30%.
In addition, the Sun StorEdge 3960 system minimises costs by adding capacity incrementally to match business requirements.
The new high-density, cost efficient and higher performing storage systems, enabled by the new disk drives, offer greater asset utilisation efficiencies and enhanced performance.
"Enhancing Sun's midrange storage systems with the two new high density and high performance drives demonstrates that Sun is delivering on its promise to provide complete storage solutions that improve productivity, enhance performance and drive down storage TCO for customers," Landsberg concludes.
Since its inception in 1982, a singular vision - "The Network Is The Computer" - has propelled Sun Microsystems, Inc (Nasdaq: SUNW) to its position as a leading provider of industrial-strength hardware, software and services that make the Net work.
