Sun Microsystems is dramatically changing the Web services arena with the launch of the new Sun ONE (Open Net Environment) Application Server 7 product line, and the free availability for enterprises and independent software vendors (ISVs) of the core version of the Sun ONE Application Server.
Research authority IDC comments: "Sun's move to provide the core version of application server free on all major platforms has the potential to shake up the competitive landscape."
Supporting all leading platforms, including Solaris, Linux, HP-UX and AIX, the Sun ONE Application Server 7 - previously iPlanet Application Server- makes it easier than ever for customers and developers to select Java as their Web services platform of choice.
By removing the cost barrier through the Platform Edition version (the core version), Sun is enabling companies to choose the technology that is best suited for the extreme performance and scalability requirements of enterprise deployments.
Companies will also be able to seamlessly upgrade from the Platform Edition to the new Standards and Enterprise Editions, at a moderate additional cost.
Stefano Mattiello, managing director of Sun Microsystems SA, comments that this free version of the Sun ONE Application Server 7 makes it more economical for enterprises to utilise the full power of J2EE in order to host applications and Web services in locations where cost was previously prohibitive.
As announced last month, the core Platform Edition is tightly integrated into the Solaris 9 Operating Environment (OE).
"With the Sun ONE Application Server 7 coming right on the heels of Sun's earlier announcement to integrate the product into the Solaris OE, it's clear that Sun is getting aggressive about gaining application server market share," says Michele Rosen, research manager at IDC.
The Sun ONE Application Server delivers excellent performance by embedding the fastest, secure HTTP engine in the market from the award-winning Sun ONE Web Server and one of the fastest Java Message Service (JMS) implementations available.
"Our Sun ONE Application Server 7 is the foundation of the integratable Sun ONE platform. It includes a fully integrated Java Web Services Pack, as well as support for SOAP, UDDI and WSDL," says Mattiello. The Sun ONE Application Server has a long history of powering some of the largest and most demanding transactional web sites in the world. The Sun ONE Application Server 7 will continue to provide ultimate performance and availability to customers such as Bank of America and the US Army.
Sun ONE Application Server, Platform Edition - Free of licence fees for enterprises and ISVs, the Platform Edition provides a high performance/small footprint core J2EE 1.3 compatible platform suitable for deploying Web and application services in places where cost was previously prohibitive. The product will be fully integrated with Solaris 9 (see related announcement from 22 May 2002 at www.sun.com/presskits/solaris9) and available as a free download for Linux, Windows, HP-UX and AIX platforms.
Sun ONE Application Server, Standard Edition - Adds operations management capabilities such as remote administration and monitoring for large scale administrative domains in a low-cost J2EE platform for enterprise-wide deployments. An intuitive interface that can be administered both locally and remotely helps drive down the cost of managing Web applications.
Sun ONE Application Server, Enterprise Edition - Providing maximum reliability and performance for mission-critical applications, this version adds Sun's patented "Always On" technology acquired from Clustra Systems earlier this year. This technology enables "self repairing" capabilities and nearly eliminates user intervention when a failure occurs by automatically determining the root cause of a failure and returning the system to its original state. With this powerful new technology, the product is designed to provide five nines availability for J2EE application session state.
