Sun introduces new low-end storage products

Johannesburg, 12 Mar 1998

Extending the scope of the Sun StorEdge product family, Sun Microsystems, has today announced the Sun StorEdge A1000 and D1000 subsystems, its first RAID arrays geared toward the workgroup and file server arena. In addition, the company introduced new Sun StorEdge UniPack and Sun StorEdge MultiPack external hard drives for use with its desktop systems and workgroup servers, as well as new internal hard drive expansion options for its workstations and servers. These products all support the Solaris operating environment, with A1000 support for HP-UX and NT slated for later this year. "The Sun StorEdge product family offers customers a complete line of storage solutions scaling from the desktop to the data centre," said James Greig, marketing manager of Sun Microsystems southern Africa. "With the A1000 and D1000, we now are offering the workgroup user the same high availability features our customers expect in their enterprise systems. For the desktop, our improved Sun StorEdge Multipak and Sun StorEdge Unipak subsystems now offer increased capacity and performance, that, when coupled with Sun StorEdge management software, can handle a wide variety of demanding performance intensive applications for the small business or workgroup." Optimized to meet the needs of file and workgroup servers for customers who want to start small and grow, the Sun StorEdge D1000 and A1000 arrays are available as stand-alone, desktop devices or as rack-mounted solutions. TheD1000 currently scales from 50 gigabytes (GB) up to 1.3 terabytes (TB), and the A1000 scales from 16GB to 1.3TB. The D1000 provides information protection through host-based RAID, while the A1000 delivers controller-based RAID, and both offer fully redundant, hot swappable power supplies, fans and drives. For customers wishing to upgrade at a later date from host- to controller-based RAID, an upgrade path will be available. The Sun StorEdge A1000 and D1000 arrays are supported by two 40 MB/per second Ultra SCSI connections and house up to twelve 4.2 GB, 10,000 rpm drives. The new Sun StorEdge MultiPack and Sun StorEdge UniPack desktop subsystems are compact, low-cost, hot-pluggable external drive enclosures for Sun`s workgroup servers and workstations. The Sun StorEdge UniPack is available with a 4.2, 9.1 or 18.2GB, 7,200 rpm disk drive while the Sun StorEdgeMultiPack subsystem is configured with up to six 4.2, 9.1 or 18.2GB,7,200 rpm disk drives. When used in conjunction with Sun StorEdge EnterpriseVolume Manager software or Solstice DiskSuite software, the SunStorEdgeMultiPack subsystem provides an outstanding desktop RAID solution. The Sun StorEdge MultiPack and Sun StorEdge UniPack subsystems can store 4.2GBto109GB of data and provide data transfer rates of up to 40MB/second via Ultra SCSI connections. In addition, 4.2, 9.1 and 18.2GB disk drives no ware available as internal expansion options for Sun`s workstations and servers. When connected to Sun`s Netra NFS server, the Sun StorEdge MultiPack provides fast and reliable network attached storage at a competitive price. With up to 64MB of non-volatile RAM, the Netra NFS server offers a choice of RAID 5 or 0+1, with high throughput at 10 millisecond response time. Installed in less than 30 minutes, the Netra NFS server is quick to deploy and easy to administer from any web browser. Automatic system monitoring and recovery features, such as Smart Recover, ensure high up-time for network users of the StorEdge MultiPack. The Netra NFS server supports most standard network protocols and interfaces, including NFS v2, v3, NT SMBorCIFS, NetWare, AppleShare, TCP/IP, NetBIOS, IPX/SPX, 10/100BaseT, ATM155/622 Mbps, FDDI, Token Ring and Gigabit Ethernet. Upgrade Programs for Sun StorEdge Products To ensure investment protection for its existing customers, Sun has created the Sun StorEdge Array Upgrade Program. Available now, this program provides aggressively priced trade-in values of up to 25 percent for those customers who wish to migrate from Sun SPARCstorage Arrays to the A1000andthe D1000. In addition, Sun is offering excellent trade-in values of upto23 percent for customers interested in migrating from Compaq,Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Digital, Clariion, Boxhill, Baydell, MTI, Artecon, and/or Lynx storage arrays to the Sun StorEdge A1000 or D1000 products.
