Sun Managed Services scales out the network computer for new customers

Johannesburg, 17 Feb 2004

Several major corporations, including DaimlerChrysler Consult Graz; Petroleo Brasileiro (Petrobras) and United Utilities are using customised Sun Managed Services engagements to help them achieve measured improvements in IT operations and reductions in risks, costs and complexities.

According to Sun Microsystems sales manager Johann Muller, these organisations join a growing list for which Sun Managed Services has helped to scale out network computing operations while allowing them to retain control over their IT resources.

"Sun Managed Services was launched five years ago across Europe and today is used in over 100 organisations around the world," he says.

Customers contributing to the broad acceptance and success of Sun Managed Services include nine out of the 10 largest global car makers, eight out of the 10 largest global telecommunications operators and six out of the world's 10 largest retail banks.

Muller believes businesses turn to Sun Managed Services because Sun offers a flexible IT sourcing approach. "Sun can manage all or part of an IT operation to meet service level agreements on a short or longer term basis. We can continue to manage data centres as needed, or will return streamlined and optimised operations back to customers when they choose to reassume management with their own staff, often better trained by Sun," he says.

Furthermore, Sun will team with partners when necessary to source additional expertise to support diverse and heterogeneous platform environments including IBM mainframe, Windows, and a variety of Linux systems across a wide spectrum of applications and industries.

"With the increasing complexity of technology, companies often find that they cannot efficiently manage their IT environments with their own in-house resources. Using Sun Managed Services, businesses can offload IT operations and management pains permanently or temporarily; when they are ready to reassume ownership, we offer the flexibility to allow them to do just that," concludes Muller.
