Sun Microsystems has set a new benchmark for server performance with the Sun Fire T1000 and T2000 servers running UltraSPARC T1 processors and the Solaris 10 operating system. Speeds achieved by these systems blew away competitors' machines for performance in recent SPEC Java Business benchmark testing.
Sun also extended its lead in performance-per-watt and SWaP ratings, further demonstrating CoolThreads systems as the most efficient platform ever for Web and application services.
"CoolThreads is a breakthrough innovation from Sun that ushers in a new era for server space and cost saving, capacity and cooling, while boosting performance," explains Helen Constantinides, Systems Practice Manager for Sun Microsystems South Africa.
She explains that servers running CoolThreads technology deliver high-end performance with greatly reduced power consumption and in a minimal footprint. "Power consumption is one of the leading issues for server customers internationally, and this is especially true in Africa," says Constantinides.
The servers are specifically orientated for web serving applications with high threads and high performance demands. This is further bolstered by the multi-thread capabilities of the Solaris 10 operating system, making them the perfect for the next generation of multi-thread application architecture.
Constantinides says these latest benchmark tests showed that the Sun Fire T1000 demonstrated a 2.5 times performance advantage over an equivalent dual processor x86 server from a competing manufacturer, while offering nearly five times better performance-per-watt than competitive systems.
The Sun Fire T2000 demonstrated nearly twice the performance advantage over a competing 4-Way x86 system, while showing similar power consumption advantages.
In addition, the Sun Fire X4100 and X4200 servers, which are powered by the fastest AMD Opteron Model 256 processors set two new world records for performance with the Java platform, highlighting the similar advantages offered by Sun's new x86-based servers.
"In modern server environments where the demand is greater than ever for cost savings, reduced power consumption and performance-per-watt benefits, Sun believes it has the perfect solutions for enterprise customers," concludes Constantinides.
