Sun Microsystems has released new Sun Fire servers which are powered by new UltraSPARCIV+ processors and deliver up to a fivefold increase in performance over previous UltraSPARC processor generations.
According to Helen Constantinides, manager client solutions data centre and data management at Sun Microsystems in sub-Saharan Africa, the announcement marks the launch of a new wave of innovation.
"The improved performance of the Solaris OS and the new UltraSPARC IV+ processor come with the same power consumption, footprint and price.
"This, complemented by its scalable high performance processing, makes the new Sun Fire servers the ideal platform for server consolidation. And customers will benefit from a seamless upgrade path to the latest server technology through SPARC-Solaris binary compatibility," she adds.
Available immediately, the new Sun Fire V490, V890, E2900, E4900 and E6900 servers are all powered by 1.5GHz UltraSPARC IV+ processors and run Solaris 10.
Since its inception in 1982, a singular vision - "The Network Is The Computer" - has propelled Sun Microsystems, Inc (Nasdaq: SUNW) to its position as a leading provider of industrial-strength hardware, software and services that make the Net work. Sun can be found in more than 100 countries and on the World Wide Web at http://www.sun.com.
