Sun Microsystems, Inc, and VERITAS Software Corporation, The Data Availability Company, today announced Sun`s support for the VERITAS VERTEX Initiative, a set of data protection solutions that utilize revolutionary snapshot backup technology to virtually eliminate backup windows and dramatically speed data recovery.
Introduced and demonstrated yesterday at the VERITAS VISION2000 user`s conference (see related news releases, dated October 23, 24 and 25), the VERITAS VERTEX Initiative is comprised of a series of VERITAS NetBackup solutions that will be delivered in two phases. In phase one, Sun Solaris Operating Environment customers will benefit from the availability of the VERITAS NetBackup ServerFree Agent, a new data protection solution for use with VERITAS NetBackup 4.0V which is designed to optimize companies` backup performance investments in storage area network (SAN) hardware. During phase two of the VERITAS VERTEX Initiative, Sun and VERITAS Software will integrate Sun StorEdge Instant Image software into the VERITAS VERTEX Initiative solutions set to increase the performance and availability of critical enterprise data.
"The VERITAS NetBackup ServerFree Agent allows Sun`s customers to easily move protected data from disk directly to tape in a SAN environment, without the involvement of an application or database server. This is a major milestone for SAN environments," said Denise Shiffman, vice president of marketing, Sun Network Storage. "By integrating our Sun StorEdge Instant Image snapshot software into VERTIAS VERTEX Initiative data protection solutions, we are offering our mutual customers added productivity and data protection for their critical production environments."
"Sun StorEdge Instant Image software is breakthrough technology that enables mission-critical applications to create a point-in-time image of data," said Neal Ater, senior vice president, Data Protection Product Group, VERITAS Software. "When coupled with our VERITAS VERTEX Initiative solution set, Sun StorEdge Instant Image software can provide higher levels of data availability and performance for Sun Enterprise server customers."
The new VERITAS NetBackup ServerFree Agent is available starting January 2001, during the first phase of the VERITAS VERTEX Initiative, for use with Version 4.0 of VERITAS NetBackup in Solaris operating environments (see related News Release, dated October 24). The second phase of VERITAS VERTEX, which will roll out over the course of next year, will feature integration with Sun StorEdge Instant Image software as well as extended support for additional SAN hardware, databases and storage systems.
VERITAS VERTEX Initiative
The VERTEX Initiative is a comprehensive set of data protection solutions that utilizes breakthrough snapshot backup technology to virtually eliminate backup windows and dramatically speed data recovery. Implemented through the VERITAS NetBackup family of data protection products, the new initiative also incorporates innovative technologies from the Company`s core volume management and file system technologies, VERITAS Volume Manager and VERITAS File System. In addition to introducing new data protection technology, the VERITAS VERTEX Initiative is flexible enough to support existing hardware and software backup implementations in heterogeneous environments. This new approach to data protection will allow organizations to protect critical business information with no loss of performance or availability, even as enterprise data grows at an unprecedented rate. Formally introduced and demonstrated to customers, partners, analysts and press at the Company`s fourth annual user`s conference, VERITAS VISION2 000, the VERITAS VERTEX Initiative is enjoying widespread support from VERITAS Software partners in the server, software, and storage management industries (see adjoining support quotes and joint news releases.)
