Due to Sun Microsystems' growing penetration of the storage sector, the company has launched Network Storage Certification Programs to enhance its complete storage solutions.
The programs, which cover the critical areas of data management, backup and recovery, and storage area networks (SAN), will be offered to the South African market through Sun Microsystems' Authorised Sun Education Centre, CS Education Solutions, which is also an Authorised Prometric Testing Centre.
"With the growing need among businesses globally for effective storage solutions, IT professionals require a greater depth of knowledge and increased capabilities in designing and managing successful storage and SAN solutions that are optimised for Sun's architectures yet open to heterogeneous environments," comments Shane Carlson, regional manager for Sun Educational Services, Middle East and Africa (MEA).

Sun's new Network Storage courseware and associated certifications were created by a special task force of storage experts. This group included Sun consultants, system and support engineers and training experts working closely with Sun value-added partners.

The certification programs include:
Sun Certified Data Management Engineer: This certification is for data management engineers and system administrators responsible for administering storage arrays. It covers the skills required to implement, configure, optimise and administer such systems.
Sun Certified Backup and Recovery Engineer: Coming in February 2002, this certification is for engineers responsible for the design and implementation of backup and recovery systems in the data centre. The examinations are designed to measure a student's knowledge of reliable backup methodology, data restoration and meeting design requirements.
Sun Certified Storage Architect: This certification is for storage architects responsible for designing and administering a storage area network. This examination focuses on the student's knowledge of SAN design and implementation, installation, administration and troubleshooting of SAN hardware and software.
