Sun sends tremors through industry with new storage range

Sun to become leading single source storage vendor, says analyst group
Johannesburg, 08 Feb 2002

Sun Microsystems today announced a complete range of storage solutions that optimises Sun's workgroup to datacentre capabilities and is open to heterogeneous environments.

This range, StorEdge Complete Storage Solutions, features new storage software, systems, services and partner programs that are expected to greatly benefit today's data continuance environment. The StorEdge Complete Solutions deliver services matched to the applications - lowering total cost of ownership (TCO).

Says Ed Broderick, principal analyst at the US-based Robert Frances group: "The combination of these new storage products, services and partnerships, along with Sun's existing infrastructure, illustrates the degree to which Sun is poised to become the single source storage vendor of choice."

"Success in the storage industry is about execution. We are delivering what our customers are asking for, which is storage software, systems and services, focused on optimal business results," says Stefano Mattiello, managing director of Sun Microsystems SA.

"Our new storage range is helping our customers maximise data continuance while driving down TCO. In addition to delivering the leading Unix servers and operating environments, we are now offering the best choice in storage."

John Brown, storage analyst at DH Brown, comments: "The level of software, hardware and services integration reflected throughout this announcement shows the determination of Sun to 'get it right' for their customers."

StorEdge Complete Storage Solutions is built on key products, partnerships and initiatives such as the Sun Fire 15K server, Sun ONE (Open Net Environment) platform and the recently announced Sun StorEdge 9900 series.

The new storage software offerings include next-generation file systems and software suites for data availability and resource management. Sun's new storage systems are also now targeted at the fastest growing space in the Unix market - the midrange market.

Comments Mattiello: "We've also introduced important new consulting, support and training services including remote services, storage centres and implementation offerings - all part of the StorEdge Complete Storage Solutions range."

Other new offerings include the Sun StorEdge Software Storage ONE, which is modelled after the Sun ONE architecture, providing an open, integrated storage management family.

The new StorEdge 3900 and 6900 series arrays are also available, while the StorEdge 9900 has been updated to extend its reach into the datacentre.

Significantly, the StorEdge Complete Storage Solutions were developed through SunTone best practices for high quality solutions. The SunTone platform is a suite of pre-assembled, pre-integrated, pre-tested, best of breed solutions.

"We've built the StorEdge Complete Storage Solutions range on a solid foundation that adheres to customers' needs for integrated services geared to meet their specific requirements," concludes Mattiello.
