The new Sun StorEdge 9990 system, which virtualises EMC storage, makes it easier for users to migrate from proprietary technology, protect existing storage investments, simplify data management and meet the global emphasis on corporate governance and business compliance.
This is according to Helen Constantinides, Practice Lead: Datacentre and Storage at Sun Microsystems sub-Saharan Africa, who says the release of the StorEdge 9990 enhances the Sun StorEdge family of products and enables Sun to offer virtualisation of external storage in both the very high-end of the enterprise with the StorEdge 9990 system, and in mid-tier with the linearly scalable Sun StorEdge 6920 system.
"Beyond virtualisation, one of the common capabilities between the two offerings is the storage partitioning feature which allows customers to configure resources to meet demands for individual and business applications. This common feature provides a powerful management option for Sun customers," she adds.
Sun now offers virtualisation support for EMC Symmetrix DMX 800, 1000, 2000, 3000 and Symmetrix 3000, 5000 and 8000 series storage devices on the StorEdge 9990 system. EMC CLARiiON CX series storage systems are scheduled to be supported on the StorEdge 9990 later this quarter.
And EMC customers now have the choice of working with a complete systems company to incorporate existing storage into an advanced information environment that provides end-to-end data management.
"We are delivering on our promise to bring open virtualisation solutions to a broad cross-section of customers. These new solutions, coupled with Solaris 10 and Sun's systems approach to solving datacentre problems, will help users simplify their infrastructure and get the best application performance for their money," she concludes.
Since its inception in 1982, a singular vision - "The Network Is The Computer" - has propelled Sun Microsystems, Inc (Nasdaq: SUNW) to its position as a leading provider of industrial-strength hardware, software and services that make the Net work. Sun can be found in more than 100 countries and on the World Wide Web at www.sun.com.
