SunSystems pays off for SA lottery system provider

Johannesburg, 23 Mar 2001

GTECH Southern Africa, which supplies a customised online lottery system for the South African National Lottery, has implemented SunSystems financial modules to manage its local operations.

The GTECH Corporation is a global supplier of computerized online lottery products and services. GTECH, with headquarters in Rhode Island and international offices in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Poland, South Africa and the United Kingdom, has contracts to supply and operate lottery systems on six continents and employs more than 4 500 people worldwide. By providing customized business solutions for each of the lotteries it serves, GTECH assists governments from all over the world in maximising revenues for good causes.

"GTECH focuses on connecting," says GTECH Southern Africa finance manager, Michael Sousa. "We connect systems to lotteries, lotteries to retailers, and retailers to players. We work around the globe to connect our customer needs to the right business solutions. It is vital that we have the required back-office support to enable us to focus on our business goals. With the exception of our head office which runs on an ERP system, SunSystems is used internally at virtually all our international sites."

Because GTECH is an international concern, adhering to deadlines for the submission of financial is essential. As SunSystems makes financial reports immediately available, it is of significant value to the company`s business. GTECH uses SunSystems to run reconciliations, processing and keeping track of accounts, debtor and vendor control and forecasting. An integrated ledger design ensures that accounts are always up to date and in balance.

"SunSystems` flexibility and customisation options differentiate it from other accounting packages," explains Sousa. "Open periods enable system configuration according to our own posting and reporting needs. Its analysis codes allow for the compilation of financial data according to suppliers and specific projects. Because we work on a project basis, this is of great benefit from a financial reporting perspective.

SunSystems enables easy interfacing with project information, and allows us to set up project accounts that track expenses by activity and by project. It enables all captured information to be presented in specifically requested report formats. Sophisticated analysis tools mean that we are able to make decisions based on solid information."

The SunSystems module was installed by iLanga Systems, a company in the Business Unusual group, which specialises in high-level financial solutions that provide real-time financial intelligence. "SunSystems has a broad support network and worldwide resources, and the software is compliant with ERP systems.

These factors make it an attractive option for global companies with offices in various countries," says iLanga Systems MD, Dion Retief. "Its compatibility with other systems makes data transfer a simple process. It is also easy to implement and to train users in a short time."

Sousa notes that implementation of SunSystems was facilitated by the fact that iLanga Systems understood the company`s special reporting requirements and provided training and 24-hour support during the initial stages of implementation.

"iLanga Systems not only understands how SunSystems software works, but also how it relates to business needs, and what can be accomplished with it. The business sense brought to the implementation only increased the product`s significant benefits."
